Our new Putting Pen To Paper series, features different individuals & showcases what they use their favourite notebook for. It could be for poetry, sketching, song writing, illustrations, notes, daily gratitudes & everything in between.
The third talented creative in our series is none other than Co-Founder & Designer of AVENUE + friend of our Founder, Jessie Shand. Beck & Jessie met when they both worked at the Bec + Bridge HQ in Sydney before both leaving to work on their brands full time. Jessie moved to NYC & Beck moved home to NZ & their brands have evolved to where they are today. We chatted to Jessie about putting pen to paper as a designer & took a glimpse inside her notebook at her latest AVENUE sketches.
Co-Founder and Designer of Avenue, a headwear label based in Sydney.
Plain or Lined paper?
When do you put pen to paper?
Basically all day, everyday. I’m a huge list maker, notetaker and a doodler. And I’m always sketching design ideas and and concepts (I only sketch by hand when designing, rarely ever on the computer)
What inspired the Pen to Paper in your images?
I’m currently sketching some new hat designs for Resort. Gabi and I are very visual people so we usually start the design process by sketching whilst playing with trims and materials by hand, before getting our first sample developed. We’re also working on our new clothing range, which is launching at the end of this year. This collection is something we’ve been developing for a really long time – we’re very excited about it. Watch this space...
What does journaling look like to you/how do you journal?
My journaling is messy, random. It’s a compilation of ideas (so I don’t forget them), design notes and fit comments. My daily/weekly goals are always jotted in there, cutting and pasting of references, fabric swatches. And of course, the doodles. What’s a journal without doodling?
