WORKSPACE TOUR: Abbey Ginns from Huski Studios

Abbey Ginns is the co-founder of Huski Studios, the beautiful Australian furniture brand based around timeless design & high quality pieces for your home. Furniture & form.
Abbey took us inside her spacious showroom & workspace & chatted to us about her brand, how she stays organised, her support network as a business owner & mother plus lots more.
First things first, how did it all begin & what was that light bulb moment when you decided to start Huski Studios?
My partner and I had just renovated our place and designed every piece of furniture to be made for the space and loved the process of doing it all. We were living overseas in Indonesia, Bryce was working in production and I had always had always loved the idea of working with interiors, so we thought lets combine our strengths and give it a go!
Your beautiful brand is based around Furniture & Form - timeless design and high quality pieces for your home. What have the highlights & challenges been to stay true to this mission?
The design process can be really tricky - it took us a long time to find the right factory which we trust and know will produce the best quality products. Sometimes I’ll design something I love, but it is impossible to construct with strength and confidence it will be long lasting. Our collection is really minimal and I have loved only creating pieces that are necessary and useful in your home.
Being a business owner & also a mum to Woodi it's important to have an incredible support network around you. Who do you lean on?
Absolutely! I literally could not run Huski and be a present mum to Woodi without the help of my Mum & partner Bryce. Thank god for family!
How has your approach to life changed since starting your business & also since becoming a mum? Is your strategy ever changing or have you found a winning formula that works for you?
Huski launched only a few months before having Woodi, so I guess this is the only way I know how to do both. We moved back to Australia, launched a business and had a baby all in the space of 6 months, so our lives drastically changed all at once. I am slowly starting to work more, or put more specific time and days into Huski, but prior to this it has always just been something that I do throughout the day, and also be a Mum at the same time. Some days feel easy and others I want to quit!
What would your advice be for other young designers wanting to follow in your footsteps - where do they start & what do they need to know?
I am still learning every single day! It sounds corny, but honestly if you are really passionate about something and it makes you happy, go for it. Its taken us a long time to get to the place we are today - many days of defeat, but so worth it.
Where do you find your inspiration for Huski Studios? And what's your personal favourite piece currently?
I find inspiration everywhere, nature, art, friends, shapes, texture, cultures, countries, feelings. I always find this question hard to answer - I guess each piece in our collection is something I would love in my own home and haven’t been able to find, so I’ve designed it. My favourite piece at the moment is The Keeper - its a big beautiful rustic dining table.
What has been your biggest career highlight with Huski Studio been to date?
It seems insignificant, but both Bryce & I being able to work full time for Huski. We always intended to grow slowly and organically and treat it as a side project, but we’re at a stage where we need to be working every day on it.
What is the first thing you do when you get to the office?
Light a candle & put music on.
We're obsessed with your workspace & studio - what essentials can we find in there that you can't live without?
Fresh greenery, a candle or diffuser, somewhere relaxing to sit and work, An Organised Life Daily Planner.
What are the top 3 ways you organise your life?
1. An Organised life Daily Planner - this is the only way I remember things.
2. Having a clean space, I can’t think straight with mess around me.
3. Writing to do lists and ticking them off.
What are your must-have desk essentials?
A lovely smooth pen, An Organised Life Daily Planner, A4 Monthly Calendar.
How do you keep your workspace organised?
I like having a place for everything to be kept, I really can’t work around mess. Keep things minimal!
What are your goals for the next 12 months / what are you most looking forward to?
To start producing higher quantities of stock, to continue to grow at the rate we have been, to explore more of Australia and be a really present parent to Woodi. To be happy! Simple things are always the most important.
