Georgia Martin & Kieran Birchall are the powerhouse couple kicking goals & living their dreams in Sydney. With a PR background Georgia is the Director of new luxe online boutique theUNDONE + Partner of MyFlowerMan - the most beautiful florist owned & run by her boyfriend Kieran.
I visited this talented duo at their stunning apartment & chatted to them about how it all began, their tips for staying organised and the lessons they have learnt along the way...
Name: Georgia Martin
Occupation: Director of The UNDONE + Partner of MyFlowerMan
How it all began…
I moved to Sydney from a small coastal town to study journalism, moved into PR once I graduated, started my own PR consulting business in which time I helped Kieran launch MyFlowerMan, then started worked on The UNDONE Store with my business partner Sara which went live in July last year.
Biggest pinch me moment…
I like to relish in the small moments. I get a real kick out of a great media piece, meeting someone I have always admired or recently some of my favourite moments are when we receive lovely feedback from our customers. I always feel very humbled that someone has taken the time to do that.
Biggest lesson I’ve learnt along the way…
It’s cliché, but go with your instincts. I have had moments where I sat back and didn’t listen to what I was desperately wanting to do or say and it’s never worked out well. Some people who know me may be surprised I’m able to hold my tongue at all but it has happened.
Say what you need to say, communicate and be as transparent as possible.
I’m inspired by…
Hardworking people. My parents both have crazy work ethics and I’m constantly inspired by them. They also both own businesses and I think anyone who has a successful business knows it takes a lot of work, there is really no shortcuts.
Biggest piece of advice…
Know your worth and don’t be limited by what other people think. I’m definitely a realistic person and I love seeking advice from people I admire but at the end of the day you have to believe in something and believe you can achieve it for yourself.
I would also say try to live in the moment. It is something I’m constantly working on because it’s so easy to get caught up the ’one day’s’ and ’when that happens’ and loose sight of what you currently have and are achieving on a day-to-day basis.
Organised to me means….
For me it’s more of a feeling, like I’m in control and have stability. It’s so nice when a week runs smoothly and you feel balanced and not stressed. That's why taking the time to try and be as organised as possible is important - it’s essential to creating that sense of calm. But I must admit it doesn’t always happen and I do have to constantly work at it.
The top 3 ways I organise my life are…
- I put absolutely everything into my calendar. It’s my diary, to-do-list and life task master all in one. I also write more detailed information in my notebook just to refer back to ideas or to help flesh out that I need to do in more detail.
- Make time to be organise. It needs it’s own time-slot ha. I try to take a moment each day to go through my day/week or even month.
- I don’t make it over complicated for myself. I use to have heaps of different ways that I tried to stay organised but they never worked out or remained long term tools. I now keep it very simple and know what works for me.
I can’t leave the house without…
My phone, preferably fully charged… standard response I’m sure.
At the moment you’ll find the below on my desk…
My laptop, phone, AOL + The UNDONE notebook + pen, magazines, my ring and my watch because I have to take them off to type and a coffee.
My workspace style is…
Minimal and practical.
First thing I do when I get to the office is…
Say hi and have a chat to the girls I work with, we always greet each other and it’s so nice to have that little moment in the morning.
Name: Kieran Birchall
Occupation: Florist, Owner of MyFlowerMan
How it all began…
I had just moved to Sydney and a friend of mine invited me to tag along one morning to the flower market. I loved it so much that when I got home I told Georg that this is what I wanted to do. 3 months later I quit my full-time job and haven't looked back.
Biggest pinch me moment…
I pinch myself every day - Never in a million years would I have thought I would be florist running my own business. It's still surreal.
The biggest lesson I’ve learnt along the way…
Believe in your yourself and the work you're producing. I find if you are confident with what you have created and believe it's good - others tend to too.
I’m inspired by…
Travelling - Seeing the world has given me such inspiration to be better and broader. When I arrive home from a few weeks away I'm usually bursting with new ideas.
The biggest piece of advice…
Take the good with the bad and know that you don't have to please everyone and you never will be able to. Life's too short to be stressed.
Organised to me means….
On time - I'm the first to admit I'm probably not the most organised guy (missing emails, forgetting to call back etc). But despite this, I'm pretty punctual.
The top 3 ways I organise my life are…
- Always having my phone charger with me.
- Organising all emails into folders. I like to have a clean inbox.
- Remembering the date.
I can’t leave the house without…
My watch - I feel naked without it.
At the moment you’ll find the below on my desk…
Flowers, secateurs, MacBook.
My workspace style is…
Mmm not that stylish - It starts off clean then gets really messy while I arrange and then clean again at the end of the day, ready for the next.
The first thing I do when I get to the office is…
Quickly run over what I have on for the day. I go to the market around 5 am so this happens very early on.
